ALISO BEACH FIRE PITS
Truth be told, I was arrogant enough to believe that I could outwit the wind and weather reports for South Orange County and find a spot that I could paddle out at. The first sign that wasn’t going to happen was at Salt Creek. Out on the bridge and looking at the water, I was pelted with a relentless, cold wind that was feathering white caps and jumbling up the water out in front. Yep, that wasn’t going to be an option so I headed north knowing full well I probably wouldn’t be in the water today.
There really isn’t any way I can explain it, but without fail, I always stop off at Aliso Beach when traveling in and out of the area. I have an affection for this beach built upon years of time spent there in the amazing waves with friends I have maintained for decades. It doesn’t hurt at all that this is such a beautiful and wonderful place. As you might have expected, Aliso Beach winds and waves weren’t faring much better.
The wind was stiff and there was a chill in the air that had me thinking about why I was outside in shorts and a t-shirt. I was struck by three groups that had squared off against the cool winds and weather drawing a line in the sand and letting it know that family day at Aliso Beach would not be ruined. There are 5 fire pits at Aliso Beach, and despite the push back from Laguna Beach residents who object to the burning smell and the tightening of regulations enforced by the AQMD, pit parties continue. They are on a first come, first serve basis and people come early to reserve them.
The wind and gusts were persistent. They weren’t anything the significance of landing a house on the Wicked Witch of the East or anything but they were cold! There were at least 3 groups laying claim to fire pits at 7:30 am this morning. Determined to not let a little old wind wreck their plans kept them motivated to camp out and put in the effort required to secure their spots. Truck beds full of firewood, beach gear strewn all over the sand next to the pit and several layers of clothing and you have fire pitters all in on having a beach day at the fire pits at Aliso Beach.
